THE ORIGINS OF WOGS
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Original Wogs:
With over 50% of voters selecting Italians, Greeks and people from other Balkan nations it is hard to deny that the word wog applies to these people.
There are strong historical reasons supporting the high vote for these people. As many people responding to the article have pointed out the word "wog" was first used in Australia towards the non-Anglo migrants that arrived here in the period after World War II when Australia ditched its racially biased immigration policy and opened to the door to a wider range of nations. The vast majority of these "New Australians" came from Southern Europe.
At the same time the Australian government made it very easy for people wishing to emigrate from Great Britain to start new lives here. The word Wog had been used in England for some time as a violent racial slur directed towards Pakistani, Indian and Arabic people who were mgrating to England in large numbers. The people who chose to leave England and seek a better life in Australia by and large did so because they had trouble getting work back at Home in Great Britain, it was easy for them to come to the conclusion that it was the Wogs that had driven them away from their home and to a country on the other side of the planet.
Upon arriving in Australia the English migrants found another group of migrants keen to take up unskilled work and immediately attached the label Wog to them, but here rather than the wogs being Asian or Arabic, they were Europeans. This is why dictionary definitions of the word wog doesnt quite explain the situation we have in Australia, we have changed the meaning of the word wog, it was adapted to suit the people that were living here during the 50s. The Anglo migrants were to lazy to come up with a new term, so they simply borrowed the one from the Old Country.
The New Wogs:
With ranks between 25% and 50% we have the Lebanese Christians, Other Mediterannean Europeans and the Turks. I am surprised that the vote for other Southern European nations wasn't higher as they share so much culture with the "original" group. I suppose that their rank was lower due to the fact that there would have been more Greek and Italian visitors to the site rather than Spanish, Maltese etc. The high vote for the Christian Lebanese and Turks shows the rise of the more recent arrivals to Australia.
Obviously many consider people from these nations to be wogs, however there is a strong element within Lebanese and Turkish Australians to avoid being classified as European. And of course we have the raging issue of religion. Many people pointed out that to say somebody isn't a wog simply because they are not Christian doesn't really make sense, as we have many religions covered even in the top 3 orignal wog nations. The issue is without doubt more deep seated than that, religion is just a convenient label to place on people. Many of the comments on the original poll article dealt with the whole Arab / European origin of culture issue. Also the widespread lack of knowledge on the history of the nation's that most of us call our "homeland" was really disappointing. The ease with which people spout racist garbage passed down from their parents and grandparents and then try and justify it with some kind of historical document was quite devestating to see.
The Fringe Wogs:
of the remainder that are worth mentioning only Lebanese Muslims received more than 15% of votes only slightly more than half the votes given to Lebanese Christians. Other European nations such as Romania, Bulgaria and the Eastern European nations also ranked well and probably only suffered due to the fact that visitors to this site would have been predominantly Southern European.
Who Missed Out?:
It was interesting to see that the line was drawn on certain European nations such as Germany, France and the Scandinavian nations, it seems that being part of Europe doesn't make wog membership automatic.
To conclude:
It is really unlikely that a "skip" who still chooses to use the word as a racial insult would do so taking into consideration whether you were from Southern Europe, whether you were Christian and whether your were first or second generation. The word was originally used to describe people that were different to the Anglo Saxons who had their way with this land for the preceding 150 years. It was never designed to be a statement of pride.
Although wogs are a diverse bunch yet we still manage to find so many common bonds between our people, even though our cultures and language are different, we share so much. Just run your finger down the top 10 regions in the ranking for this poll, every single one of the nations listed has had a war, or serious conflict or is of a different religion to each other. Yet here in Australia we can come together and discuss things, share experiences and find so many common bonds. Yes part of that is because we or our families chose to live here rather than back in those nations, but where else in the world can Italians, Greeks, Serbs, Turks, Lebanese and Croats feel a part of a single community?
